Ben Hooker took the 2-year students to tour Salton Sea near Joshua Tree as part of his studio on Emergent Conditions.
L.A. is a mess of extremes, contradictions, and unlikely interactions. It has multiple identities. It is simultaneously organized and chaotic. It can feel suburban and repetitive, yet it’s arguably the most diverse city in the country. It’s a city with an obsession with surface, and surface image, with the synthetic. Its irrigated lawns and air-conditioned interiors flaunt a control over nature and natural forces. Yet it’s also a city where wildlife and extreme weather events frequently and disruptively encroach on its manicured lawns.
Wind Tunnel Graduate Center for Critical Practice is an initiative of the graduate programs in Art and Media Design Practices at Art Center College of Design. The Wind Tunnel, situated between the two programs in a former supersonic jet testing facility on Art Center's south campus, is a forum for speakers, conferences, exhibitions, residencies, screenings, and publications.
