Colloquium: Groundwater

As a parallel project to the annual JPL/Caltech/ArtCenter Data to Discovery Program https://datavis.caltech.edu, MDP students worked with Maggie Hendrie and collaborator Hillary Mushkin, (visual artist and Research Professor of Art and Design at Caltech, Incendiary Traces http://www.hillarymushkin.com) The Summer project, “Groundwater” researched the contexts in which the data is sourced. Serving as a case study, our research aims to generate questions, materials and insights into parallel ways of knowing the context in which the scientific discovery and data live. The research into context focuses on the way knowledge is produced both within, and outside of, “scientific” data, for example; historical and current land use, the dynamics of collaborative prototyping, drawing, sketching and visual representations of meaning.
