De-Tour: Work
Los Angeles is the beach, the movie industry, freeways, and the Hollywood sign. It is also a vibrant and strange intersection of people, economies, industries, technologies, landscapes, ecologies, histories, cultures, futures, burritos, shawarma, and Sriracha sauce.
The De-Tour is the first official event of each academic year at the MDP. It launches the term for the program, and serves as an opportunity for students from across tracks and year levels to learn from one another and to develop the kind of critical viewing, conversation, and “speculative reflection” that we value and promote here. The annual De-Tour is a longstanding MDP tradition, initiated by Peter Lunenfeld and current faculty member Norman Klein (originally as the Dialectical Bus Tour).
