Yixin Chen investigates public "spaces", privacy, observation and surveillance in "Workplace of a Feeder Cam-Ring"

A Cam-Ring feeder is a fictional occupation related to public cameras, privacy, observation, and surveillance. The Cam-Ring Feeder would be responsible for managing and updating a system called "Cam-Ring," which consists of multiple-layer concentric circles showing a place with different timelines.

De-anthropic Weather Sensing

This is an AR experience that presents a dynamic simulation of native birds interacting with atmosphere pressure to sense the change of weather. Most birds have a special sensory organ in their middle ear called the Vitali organ. This organ helps them sense atmospheric pressure changes, which somehow signals them what to do next.

"Who is the viewer and who is the viewee?" Giah Ki

"Who is the viewer and who is the viewee?" Giah Kim explores concepts of perception in her interactive installation "Movement in Between"

In the installation a real-time eyeball staring at the viewer and following the movement of the viewer. The camera above the head captures the viewer’s movement in the white circle and transmits the video on two screens on the floor. Then, the viewer becomes a pupil of the eyeball. Viewers become “others” by becoming an object getting viewed, while the viewee becomes a viewer, “us,” and the dual situation makes the whole space ironic.#installation #movement #interactiveexperience #mediadesign #art

Recent MDP alumna Nanyi Jiang

Substrate Fantasia is a speculative fabulation of a substrate-centered world called Substratocene in 2180, a transitional era between current Anthropocene towards an ecological utopia. The shared goal in Substratocene is to redefine material as substrate for fungi to live on, increase biodiversity and co-evolve with fungi.
There are three levels of fabulations in this project:

I. Substratization Labs: world-wide material labs that put their endeavor in transitioning anthropocentric materials to become habitable for fungi. The lab sets the ground for human-fungi co-living experience through different geographical regions and cultures. The possibility of living materials also leads to new multi-sensory experiences and interactions between human and materials.

II. Nurseries and Lifestyle Change: living nature of materials in Substratocene redefines human habitats by welcoming fungi into the space. Long term maintenance relationship is built between human and fungi through daily routine of care, spore collection and cultivation.

III. Social Exchange and Bio-heritage: physical interactions among humans and built environment thus become sporing events. Through touches, fungi spores can be transported and exchanged, allowing exponential increase in fungi mating and mutation possibilities. This leads to generational passing down of bio-heritage and co-evolution.

Part documentary part speculative design this video depicts Guillermo as he walks the viewer through a typical day on the job of a truck driver. As the video progresses the audience finds out Guillermo might not be physically there.

Prior to Alans previously shared work "The Machine Breathes" a throughline can be traced back to his imaginaries of work. Alan investigated and speculated on our relationship with machines, labor and the interwoven ties of the evolution of artificial intelligence as a relational artifact. #FutureOfLabor #speculativefiction #hci #ai

The Machine Breathes

What will be your last memory of breath, as we know it now? Inspired by my observations of the Taleggio Valley and its people, my project considers what the future of breath might become as it intersects with the parallels of infestation and pollution. Through a speculative visual digital narrative rooted in the Valley, infestations from different beings are embedded, spreading through air like insects, flies, pollens and the other being the pollution of the Taleggio Valley via Nitrogen dioxide, Benzo[a]pyrene, Ozone, and PM. The AI foresees the future of breath through the entanglement of sensor monitoring and machine vision, in the places we inhabit.

Alan Amaya, Is a media designer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. He designs narratives using mixed digital media from films, participatory co-making, and 3D mixed-realities. He is excited about the unexpectedness that a well designed fiction can open up, and the critical political discussions that it may cultivate. He practices design research to visualize and materialize the framework for emerging technologies to play roles in multi-species ecologies.

Recent MDP alum/NAHR fellow Alan Almaya (pictured second from right) recently filed this dispatch from his summer residency in Val Teleggio, Italy:

"I've based my project on ethnographic research I've conducted while talking to local farmers and cheese makers and on my observations of the valley. I'm considering how the local people relate to air, how it has become part of the cultural atmosphere embedded in climatic mythology, and the farming practices of the local cheese makers, the Bergamini.

My observations and research have aided me in considering what the future of breath might look like and speculate that it might be rooted in sensor monitoring of what we breathe. I've been thinking a lot about the parallels of infestation and pollution and so I'm making a speculative video about the local region that is split into these categories, infestation that is spread through air and wind which includes bugs like flies and grasses and the other being pollution of the Taleggio Valley via smoke that originates from wood burning and farming machinery.

My process includes documentation of the machinery, wood burning, flies and grasses and will visualize the molecular content by augmenting and animating LiDAR scans of these origin objects. I'm speculating on how air might be monitored at the molecular level using machine vision on the "lungs" of our homes, windows."
